Missing the Final Points but Dominating the Pack
This past Thursday, June 27, 2024, marked the third round of the Munich Thursday Criteriums. After securing a 1st and 2nd place finish in the previous race, the CSBikes Road Team had high expectations. We wanted to keep the momentum rolling—not just for the day’s result, but to solidify our 1st and 2nd place positions in the overall series standings. Aside from Andy Bartmann, who was out due to illness, the entire squad was at the start line. However, the competition was fierce, with Silias Motzkus and the full 54x11 team back in the mix.
The CSBikes crew laid out a tactical plan to dominate even this elite field, and it unfolded exactly as envisioned. Anderl, Chris, Hofi, Carl, and Flo worked tirelessly to pilot Basti and Martin into position for the intermediate sprints while keeping the peloton neutralized between the points laps. Basti also launched several attacks of his own, injecting an incredibly high pace into the race.
Team Shows Dominance Until the Very End Despite Late Mishap
Heading into the final double-points sprint, Martin and Basti were sitting in 1st and 2nd. The goal for the final three laps was to put everything on the line and close out the race with the same dominance we had shown throughout. It was a textbook performance until the penultimate corner, where a sudden incident allowed Silias and two other riders to open a small gap over the rest of the field. Flo managed to bridge across, but he couldn't prevent Silias from taking the final sprint and had to settle for 4th in that lap.
With those final points, Silias finished the race with a single point more than Martin, snatching the victory in the last 300 meters of a race that our team had otherwise completely controlled. The final results were 2nd for Martin, 4th for Basti, and 11th for Flo. Fortunately, the result has little impact on the overall series, where we maintain our 1st and 2nd place rankings.
What’s the takeaway for the team? A bit of disappointment over that final lap, BUT an incredible boost in motivation for the next race. We proved that we can dominate the strongest riders and teams in the field.
